Reasons to Enjoy This Tuna Salad
My meal prep regimen has always included quick and simple salads. Furthermore, I’m not referring to rapidly wilting leafy green salads. Rather, I’m talking about robust, long-lasting, and delectable options like egg salad, salmon salad, shrimp salad, chicken salad, and my personal favorite—this tuna salad. In addition to being completed in fifteen minutes, it’s also:
- a dinner high in protein. Tuna is essentially pure protein because it has few calories and fat. About 26 grams of protein are found in one can!
- Excellent for preparing meals. It keeps well in the refrigerator for three to four days, making it ideal for a light and fresh meal that can be prepared in a variety of ways or a tasty lunch, especially for children.
- Endlessly customizable. Even though this traditional version tastes great just the way it is, you may experiment and make it creamier, chunkier, or spicier. Read more about that below!
Tuna Salad Ingredients
- Canned Tuna: Wild Planet wild albacore tuna packed in water is my preferred canned tuna. It will be linked in the recipe card that follows! See the next section for further details on why this is my preferred option.
- Mayonnaise: For the freshest flavor and texture, use your preferred brand of mayonnaise or, even better, make your own at home. For a lighter alternative, Greek yogurt can be used.
- Dijon Mustard: Although it may not be included in every tuna salad recipe, this ingredient is revolutionary. In my opinion, it’s a must-have since it gives the lighter flavors a strong, tangy contrast!
- Celery and Red Onion: These give each bite a crisp, new texture.
- Parsley: Seafood, particularly tuna, tastes great with fresh herbs like parsley, which give it a burst of freshness.
How Tuna Salad Is Made
Prep the tuna and other ingredients. Before putting the tuna pieces in a medium-sized mixing bowl, drain each tuna can. Next, prepare the remaining ingredients (parsley, celery, red onion, Dijon mustard, and mayonnaise) and add them to the bowl.
Mix and serve. To achieve the correct texture, break up any large chunks of tuna and mix everything together with a fork. Add salt and pepper for seasoning and stir again.
Tuna Salad Variations
- Tuscan Tuna Salad: With layers of bright and fresh Tuscan flavor from sun-dried tomatoes, salty olives, and an abundance of herbs and lemon juice, this is a great no-mayo option.
- Broccoli Tuna Salad: Add chopped green onions, broccoli rice, and other herbs to your tuna salad to make it even more green.
- Tuna Salad with Pickles: Add chopped dill or sweet pickles and capers for further acidic, salty taste. The creamy salad is a perfect match for the harshness.
- Curry Tuna Salad: For a sweet and savory twist, stir in chopped almonds, raisins, sliced apples, and curry powder. For a creamier consistency, you may also substitute some Greek yogurt for some of the mayo.
- Egg Tuna Salad: For an additional protein boost and a really tasty, substantial supper, add diced hard-boiled eggs.
Ways To Serve
- Tuna Sandwich: Add a layer of lettuce and tomato to make it a traditional sandwich. Try making a tuna melt, which involves making a grilled cheese sandwich and then carefully separating the bread to add spoonfuls of tuna salad on top.
- Tuna Wrap: For a low-carb, light alternative, use butter lettuce leaves or wrap the salad in tortillas (like my cassava flour tortillas).
- Layer on a salad: For a simple, put-together lunch, I adore this tuna salad served over baby spinach or mixed greens. For a fresh dressing, drizzle with lemon juice and olive oil.
- Stuffed Avocado or Tomato: For a visually appealing and tasty presentation, scoop the salad into the avocado or tomato halves, like in my tuna-stuffed avocados!
- Serve as a delicious dip: For a quick and popular appetizer or snack, serve it with chips or crackers.
